...coffee cake
12.18.16
Baby it's cold outside...the sun is shining but the wind is howling and it's bitterly cold...
...perfect baking weather. I was up early this morning and decided to bake coffee cake.
I mean, who doesn't love waking up to the smell of cinnamon in the morning?
Austin and I have different recollections of when I actually bake this.
My version is that I use to only bake this when we had over night guests so we'd have something nice to enjoy with our morning coffee. Amanda crashed in the spare room...she's an over night guest...hence the coffee cake!
His version is that I only made it when my mom use to fly out...which Austin says he can count on one hand how many times she actually came to visit.
He's probably more right than me because my memory isn't so great anyway!
I do however remember his little face and him asking me if I was making coffee cake because he knew whoever was coming over was spending the night.
Needless to say, Austin was happy, Amanda was happy which made me happy. Austin mentioned how special those memories of me making and him eating the cake are to him.
Are there better coffee cakes out there? Maybe... but I don't even care to try a new one when it's this one that's filled with priceless childhood memories.
The recipe can be found HERE.
I added about a TBSP of sour cream to the milk for added moistness.
What special memories do your recipes hold? I'd love to hear.
Happy (Sunday coffee) snapping!

ReplyDeleteCan never go wrong with streusel and drizzle! Thanks Tamar
DeleteKelly, this is beyond sweet. I had to giggle because my kids and I have different memories surrounding my baked goods as well. I'll have to try your recipe, it looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteI bet we could swap stories Daenel!
DeleteFabulous looking coffee cake. I am not a breakfast/morning maker, not sure why.
ReplyDeleteInteresting Sarah. Some peeps just aren't morning breakfast eaters.
DeleteIsn't it amazing how we all remember certain traditions in different ways.....it's the same at my house...The coffee cake looks delicious and I am definitely going to try your recipe...Merry Christmas to you and your family.....
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas Nancy. Thank you for stopping by. Like I said...I'm sure there are better coffee cakes out there! Hope you like it!
DeleteHow wonderful! And now I want a piece of coffee cake! It looks(and I can almost smell it) yummy! With the bitter cold single digit 7 degrees this morning, I think I will indulge in a coffee cake too. After all, I did take the day off work today to play catch up...and this will keep me motivated! Aloha Kelly!
ReplyDeleteI do love the streusel and icing! Happy Holidays Vicki!
DeleteWith those pics I swear I could almost smell it and taste it!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious!!!
Hi Carolina! It's always nice to have new visitors! Thank you for stopping by. Merry Christmas.
DeleteI am now hungry, the coffee cake looks delicious! Whenever I had a sleep-over my mom would make a concoction in the Crock Pot with potatoes, cheese, pizza sauce and meat. I loved it and so did everyone else. I will have to ask her about it. Kinda of a weird recipe to think of, but it did put a smile on my face. :) Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds delicious!! It's funny how our moms never new that making something would make a lasting memory and yet my kids have made memories of their own from me!
DeleteOh my, what a gorgeous and delicious looking coffee cake, Kelly !
ReplyDeleteWould love to have some with my morning coffee :-)
Love your photos !
Have a wonderful Christmas time !
Sylvia
